Union County Rallies Past Trojans in 6th District Tournament

wc baseball1

WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (5/22/13) - One swing of the bat by Union County’s Kyle Griffin brought Webster County’s baseball season to an end Monday night in the opening round of the Sixth District Tournament held at B.T. Wayne Field in Henderson.

WCHS senior Brennan Pritchett worked out of several jams in the first five innings with his sharp breaking ball, limiting the hard-hitting Braves to just three hits while striking out seven. Pritchett had defeated the Braves 3-1 two weeks ago, for the first WCHS win over Union County in six years. But Union took advantage of two hits against Pritchett in the bottom of the sixth and set the stage for Griffin’s two-run double.

Consecutive singles from Micah Brown and Jake Main put runners on first and second in the sixth. Griffin then laced the double into left field to plate both runners giving the Braves a 2-1 lead.

Webster had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Tyler Hedrick stroked a leadoff double and then moved to third on an infield single from Reese Johnson. A perfect squeeze bunt down the first base line from Madison Melton allowed Hedrick to sprint home, giving Webster a 1-0 lead in the pitcher’s duel.

Pritchett worked out of a possible Union scoring opportunity in the bottom of the frame with a runner on third and no outs. Main, a former Trojan who transferred to Union this season, ripped a double to right field. The freshman catcher raced all the way to third base when the ball was booted into the bullpen in foul territory. But Pritchett struck out the next two hitters and then enticed an pop up to get out of the inning without scoring.

Union’s sophomore hurler Christian Ricketson limited Webster to just three hits and struck out three of the four batters he faced in the seventh after gaining the 2-1 lead.

The Braves finished with nine hits including three doubles. Both teams made one error. Webster, which features seven seniors, finished the season with a 13-20 record while the Braves (13-20) advanced to Wednesday’s Sixth District Championship game against Henderson County (24-8). Both squads will advance to next week’s Second Region Tournament scheduled for Elmer Kelly Stadium in Madisonville.
