golf coed2 300WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (7/31/13) - A beautiful weekend provided the perfect setting for a memorable finish at the annual "Stars and Stripes" couples golf scramble held at Providence Municipal Golf and Recreation Center.
 
With temps hovering around 78 degrees both days, golfers were treated to an unusually mild late-July weekend, and they took advantage with some exceptional play on the course. Heading the way were the husband and wife team of Wayne and Diana Adams, who fired an opening day 11-under par, 61. The duo followed with a 9-under, 63, on day two to hold a back nine charge from Cliff Etheridge and partner, Krystal Gibson.
 
The Adams, the 2012 runner-ups, held a three-stroke lead over the entire championship flight after day one. In all, seven teams carded 64s in first round action as a crowded leader board stayed within striking distance of the leaders.
 
However, it was Etheridge and Gibson who made the loudest charge as they cut the lead down to just one stroke as they made the turn for home. By the time the two couples had completed the par 5, 13th, things were all square with just five holes to play. A costly bogey on the par 3, 15th from Etheridge and Gibson gave the Adams their one stroke lead back.
 
As the two teams made their way to the 18th and final hole, Gibson calmly tapped in a three-footer for birdie, placing the pressure back on the Adams' pairing. Looking at a 15-footer, Diana Adams took first crack at the birdie putt to maintain the one-stroke lead and secure the victory. Her attempt slid by the right lip. Wayne Adams then took dead aim, and as he has done countless times before, calmly found the bottom of the cup for the win.

golf coed1 300In the end, Etheridge/Gibson fired an impressive two-day total of 64/61-125 to finish just a shot back. Finishing third in the championship flight was the Tyler White/Cassidy Thomas team.
 
Other winners included Tanya Wells/Troy Hopper in the first flight and Tommy and Debi Barton in second flight action.
 
More than 50 golfers took part in the tourney, with teams from Indiana, Illinois and Tennessee traveling to Providence to compete.
 
"We are proud of the tourney we put on year-in, year-out," said Jon Garrett, general manager. "It's almost like a family reunion when we hold this event. So many familiar faces."
