Editorial - A Tribute to our Soldiers

veteran proudUnited States of America (11/11/12) – My name is J.L. Graham, and I am the son of a soldier.

My dad was in the United States Army, serving as a soldier during the Korean War. Also, my brother was a Navy soldier. Both my Dad and my Brother are at peace now, in Heaven.

I come from a family of soldiers, servants of the United States of America. Though my Dad, Billy Eugene Graham, and my Brother, Terry Lee Graham, have gone on to their reward, I think of them constantly. Dad rarely ever talked of his service in the Korean War, because it hurt him. His injuries weren’t physical, but were emotional. He was there as his best friends, brothers in service to the United States of America, fell. His injuries were to his heart, as he watched them die. Though my Dad suffered throughout his entire life from having to see the things he saw, he never once regretted it. He always told me, “Son, I did it for you, for your brothers, your Mom, and for my home country. I’d do it all again.” I heard this phrase over and over. He meant it.

Dad was so dedicated to his service that, when time came around that he could get out of the army, he chose to stay. He served in the White House under President John F. Kennedy until just after Kennedy was assassinated. My Dad did his time, as did my brother, and I cannot express how proud that I am to be a member of a family of soldiers.

As someone who has looked into the eyes of a soldier and saw the suffering, the price they had to pay, to maintain my freedom, I ask all of our SurfKY Readers to take a moment today. Take a moment of silence, and look to heaven, and thank all those who gave their all to keep your freedom. Also, please take notice of those that are still with us that have served, and do serve, to give us all we have today. Our soldiers are priceless. They are the United States of America’s most valuable asset. They are the ones that will take a bullet for you.

Dad, and Terry, as you sit in Heaven today, I want to thank you and all of our veterans and soldiers, for all you do, and have done, for our country today.

J.L. Graham
