'Go Red' This Valentine’s Day

Valentines day americanredcMADISONVILLE, Ky. (2/13/14) – Pitter-patter. Pitter-patter. Pitter-patter.

It is the sound of your heart accelerating its beat as your Valentine walks your way.

Valentine’s Day is Friday, causing more people to notice their heart’s activity.

The American Heart Association’s “Go Red” campaign also wants to raise awareness this month for the health of women’s hearts.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women.

It is the cause of death for one in three women; one death every minute in the United States. It causes more fatalities than all forms of cancer combined, says the American Heart Association.

Researchers say that 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors that could eventually lead to a heart attack.

Factors include: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, family history, obesity, and age.

Silent heart attacks can be deadly for American women, and the warning signs are not the same as those in men.

Women can experience minor symptoms like fatigue, straining in the chest, jaw, upper back, and arms; indigestion, and flu-like symptoms. Doctors say that often times, women can experience no symptoms at all.

Even though statistics show that no woman is safe from the disease, there are things they can do to prevent themselves from becoming another number.

Women should:

  • Stay active.
  • Not smoke.
  • Eat healthily
  • Lose weight .
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Have one drink a day.
  • Know your body.
  • Go to the doctor.
  • Manage your blood sugar/pressure.
  • Know your family history.
