meteor earthUNITED STATES (2/17/14) — They say it's highly unlikely for a meteor to strike the planet with enough force to cause an extinction event like the one believed to have ended the reign of the dinosaur about 60 million years ago, but the consequences of any significant strike would definitely end life as we know it on planet Earth.

Tonight, a meteor the size of three football fields will pass within a safe distance of Earth, according to NASA scientists.

Near-Earth asteroid 2000 EM26's flyby comes roughly a year after two other major near-Earth objects passed by on Feb. 15, 2013.

As scientists were watching the 98-foot asteroid's path as it neared Earth, an unrelated space rock exploded above Chelyabinsk, Russia causing damage to buildings and injuring as many as 1,000 people.

To watch a live webcast about 2000 EM26, go to www.space.com or www.slooh.com. The broadcast will begin at 10 CST.
