WEBSTER COUNTY, KY (10/31/12) - With all of the publicity of the Presidential race and the many local races around Webster County, little has been said about House Bill 1, which will appear on all ballots in the state on November 6.
The ballot question reads: “Are you in favor of amending the Kentucky Constitution to state that the citizens of Kentucky have the personal right to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife, subject to laws and regulations that promote conservation and preserve the future of hunting and fishing, and to state that public hunting and fishing shall be a preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife?”
Most people who actively hunt and fish have probably heard of this bill.
If passed, Bill 1 would mandate that hunting and fishing can never be outlawed in the state without the vote of the people. So a “yes vote” means that from this day forward the government cannot outlaw hunting or fishing without first letting the public vote on it.
A “no” vote doesn’t mean that hunting or fishing will be banned, it just means things will continue as they are.
“That’s a big step I think in the right direction to help not only this generation of sportsmen, but the next,” said Representative Greg Stumbo, who co-sponsored the bill with Representatives Leslie Combs. “We have a wonderful heritage of sports in this state. Kentucky was and still is the happy hunting ground.”
