Letter to the Editor

letter editor2WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (1/9/13) - Dear Editor:

The students, faculty, staff and administration of Webster County Schools are saluting this community’s elected education leaders during January in Kentucky’s 18th annual observation of School Board Recognition Month.

Tim McCormick, Jeff Pettit, Mickey Dunbar, David Higgins and Leland Steeley are among the 872 school board members being honored across the Commonwealth this month by 174 local school districts.

Our board members do far more than show up at one or two meetings a month, cast a few votes, pocket their total compensation of $75 and go home. Most folks would be very surprised at the hours of preparation, of questions, of discussion of options and sometimes differences of opinion that our board members are involved in for all of the issues that come up at every meeting and work session.

Our district is working in a new state school assessment system that gave us some good measurements as well as some challenges when the scores came out a few weeks ago. Our board members will need to spend countless hours gaining an understanding of the new accountability system to prepare themselves to make the decisions that will support our district wide improvement to move every child to proficiency in learning.

I’m proud to work side by side with this group of selfless colleagues and the people of our community should be just as proud. I presented certificates of recognition to them from KSBA at a local meeting, but I would like to invite everyone to thank our board members for the important work they are doing and five them your support.

Sincerely,

James A. Kemp
Superintendent ~
