Paula Z’s Café to Accept Senior Meal Vouchers

GRADDWEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (3/13/13) - Thanks to a unique pilot project being launched by Green River Area Development District (GRADD) and Webster County Senior Services, Webster County senior citizens will soon have a new place to eat.

Residents 60 and over may be eligible to receive monthly meal vouchers that can be used at Paula’Z Café, located at 145 Marlin Street in Providence in the former Ruth and Bob’s building.

“This is only going to be a trial, but we really hope it works out,” said Paula Zaretzke, owner of Paula’Z. “When we set this up they told me that we are only the second restaurant in Kentucky to do something like this. The other is in Lexington.”

The program is intended to provide for the nutritional needs of seniors, while offering an alternative to congregate meals—served weekdays at 11:30 a.m.—at senior centers in Providence, Dixon and Sebree.

“We’re always looking for ways to better serve today’s seniors, particularly baby boomers who may not embrace the traditional senior center setting,” said Beth Bobo, GRADD aging services manager. “This program allows clients the flexibility to enjoy meals on their own time schedule and perhaps in the company of family members.”

Seniors can obtain vouchers at the Webster County Senior Center (44 North College Street, Dixon). They are asked to present them to Paula’Z staff at the time they place their order.

This project is funded under a contract with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health & Family Services’ Department for Aging & Independent Living (DAIL), through the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Administration on Aging (AoA). All meals must meet dietary guidelines established by DAIL.

Zaretzke said that GRADD and Senior Services had developed a menu to make it easier for customers to understand which foods were acceptable options.

“We’re really excited about this,” said Zaretzke. “And I know we’ve had a lot of customers who are excited about this as well.”
