The King and I Comes to Western Kentucky

KING1

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (7/11/13) - “It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives. The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways.” That is the background to a famous musical by Rogers and Hammerstein’s.

Wednesday, the Madisonville Rotary Club got a preview of some of the story and music. “It was simply wonderful and fun” one Rotarian said.

The play is based on a book Anna and the King by Margaret Landon. The King is played by Sean Mooningham who recently performed to acclaim in The Foreigner at the Glema Center. Mooningham has long been involved in theatre as has Janet Corum who plays the widow Anna Leonowens.

Lynn Curtis is the musical director for the Madisonville production and she accompanied “The King and Anna” as they entertained the Rotarians. Curtis was excited telling about the production. She said it was a large cast with many veterans of the theatre as well as some new comers (including her husband and two grandchildren).

Performances are July 19 & 20, 2013 @ 7:00pm, July 21, 2013 @ 2:00pm. Tickets are available by calling 270-821-2787 or may be purchased online at http:///www.glemacenter.org.

Here is the rest of the story: “East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination. With both the King and Anna keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, they grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story. Along with the dazzling score, the incomparable Jerome Robbins ballet, ‘The Small House of Uncle Thomas,’ is one of the all-time marvels of the musical stage.”

If you have not made plans to attend, do so at once. You will be glad you did. Based on what the Rotarians saw, you should expect an excellent performance.

Music by Richard Rodgers | Book by Oscar Hammerstein II | Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II | Based on Anna and the King by Margaret Landon | Original Choreography by Jerome Robbins|Directed by Fred Eiras| Musical Direction by Lynn Curtis.
