BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (3/18/13) – Seven members of the Western Kentucky University Forensics Team traveled to St. Louis, Mo., March 15-17 to compete in the Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive Tournament.
WKU’s team of seven received excellence awards in both debate sweepstakes and overall sweepstakes, against more than 85 other schools. The team also closed out the final round of Lincoln-Douglas debate, leaving no other schools left to debate. Therefore, WKU students Nefertiti Dukes and Spencer Orlowski were named tournament co-champions.
In two weeks the team will travel to Hutchinson, Kan., in an attempt to regain the national championship at the American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament. Two weeks after that, WKU will close out the season in Huntington, W.Va., at the National Forensic Association’s national tournament, the final and largest collegiate speech tournament of the year.
Individual results for the Pi Kappa Delta National Comprehensive Tournament are as follows:
Nefertiti Dukes, a sophomore from Miami Gardens, Fla., national co-champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate, second in impromptu speaking and a superior award in informative speaking.
Spencer Orlowski, a junior from Davie, Fla., national co-champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Rebekah Hall, a freshman from Des Moines, Iowa, national champion in extemporaneous speaking and fifth in impromptu speaking.
Emma Collins, a sophomore from Chicago, Ill., second in after-dinner speaking and fourth in extemporaneous speaking.
Tyler Prochazka, a sophomore from Newton, Kan., semifinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate and sixth in impromptu speaking.
Alexis Elliott, a junior from Kansas City, Mo., third in impromptu speaking and quarterfinalist in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
