National Grandparents Day - Don’t Forget to Give Your Grandparents a Hug and Kiss

grandparents dayFRANKFORT, Ky. (9/8/13) – Celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day, National Grandparents Day was originated by Marion Lucille Herndon McQuade.
 
McQuade was a housewife from Fayette County, West Virginia. Her main motivation of this day was to help the lonely elderly living in the nursing homes. She hoped that it would persuade grandchildren to visit with their grandparents and learn heritage and wisdom from them.
 
Through concerted efforts, McQuade’s campaign went statewide. McQuade and her team went to the media in hopes that they would garner support. Then in 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed National Grandparents Day.
 
Most people celebrate this day with private family parties to reminisce and discover family roots and learn understanding and patience. It also helps with enhancing communications between generations.
