MADISONVILLE, Ky. (1/18/12) - Hopkins County Attorney, Todd P’Pool, and the Madisonville Police Department are asking for support as they launch a new K9 Unit in Madisonville, Kentucky.

Williams stated that, “The Madisonville Police Department, as one of its major strategic goals strives to promote public safety and build community partnerships. Through the direction of the community, a K-9 program is listed as a top priority to keep drugs off the streets and out of our schools.”

“I am delighted that our agency is making the initial investment of $2500.00 to establish a new K9 Unit in Madisonville,” stated P’Pool. “In the wake of recent school tragedies, I would like to see a K9 unit available to make rounds in our local school system and increase our efforts of highway drug interdiction. I am also pleased to report that we’re keeping local dollars in Hopkins County to enhance the safety of our schools and our community.”

In 2012, the County Attorney Traffic Safety (CATS) program was initiated and allows traffic violators to take an online safety course and pay a fee of $125, a portion of the fee is retained in the office of the County Attorney for public awareness and prevention efforts like these.

The collaboration between the Hopkins County Attorney and Madisonville Police Department is seeking to raise $20,000.00 of private and public funds for a full-time K9 officer and trained police dog. The Madisonville Police Department hopes to receive a trained German Shepherd or Malawa ready for service by February 1, 2013.

“I hope the community sees the benefit of what we’re trying to accomplish and will offer support. We are happy to receive any size donation and remind donors that their assistance can be tax deductible,” stated Chief Wade Williams of Madisonville Police Department.

P’Pool and Williams will be seeking matching funds from the Madisonville City Council and Hopkins County Fiscal Court.

Anyone interested in making a financial contribution should call Madisonville Police Department at 270-821-1720 or the Hopkins County Attorney at 270-821-3164.
