Time to Bloom in Madisonville

america bloom 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (4/16/13) – The City of Madisonville’s America in Bloom Madisonville initiative announces the official launch of our 3rd Year in the program. America in Bloom is a nationwide community pride program that promotes beautification through education and community involvement by encouraging the use of flowers, plants, trees, and other environmental and lifestyle enhancements.

America in Bloom is based on strategies and organizational models that have been tested and used successfully by municipalities across the country. By encouraging and contributing to the beautification of the city’s landscape and environment, we strengthen pride in our community and increase the standard of living for our residents, businesses, and guests. For more information on America in Bloom, please visit www.americainbloom.org.

Through this program, our city will compete with other cities of similar populations and be judged in six categories. The judges will visit and review our city on June 13-14, 2013. Following their visit, we will receive a detailed evaluation that will also include suggestions and strategies of ways we can implement sustainable improvements in our community.

The six categories are:
Overall Impression Environmental Awareness
Heritage Preservation Urban Forestry
Landscaped Areas Floral Displays

In our first year in the program, we were rated as a “2 Bloom” community with awards in Community Involvement and our public art Sculpture Program. Last year, we increased

our Bloom Rating to “3” with an award in Community Involvement and we were also voted the National You Tube Video Award Winner.

Our teams of dedicated volunteers are already working in their respective areas to make improvements in our hometown. Some of those projects include improvements to the “Front Doors” of our city with work on the landscaping of both Exits 42 & 44, Tree Give-Aways, a tree Inventory of the Downtown Historical District, a High School Flower Show Competition, additional flowers and hanging baskets are being added to the downtown area, and much more. This year, our Floral Displays team has chosen flowers in Hot Pink, Yellow, and White and encourages our community to plant in those colors!

This effort requires help from the entire community. It is more than just flowers, trees, and landscaping. The America in Bloom Madisonville initiative is a culture changing project for our community with a goal of making a positive impact on our economic development landscape.

Anyone interested in helping to improve their hometown are welcome to contact Shane Browning at the Community Foundation office (270-245-2250) or Leslie Curneal, at the city of Madisonville (270-824-2100), for more information!
