CENTRAL CITY, Ky. (3/14/13) – Don't be alarmed if you see hundreds of people in karate garb invading Muhlenberg County this weekend. It's all in good fun, and part of a sport, even a way of life for many, known as Tae Kwon DO (TKD).
From its roots in South Korea, The Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Association ( T.T.C.A.), headquartered in Louisville, has chosen the Central City Convention Center for tournament action that begins Friday, and wraps up with finals on Saturday.
Jim Johnson, owner of Muhlenberg County Tae Kwon DO Studio in Central City, has spent 40 years in the sport and has earned a 4th Degree Black Belt. Johnson says he couldn't be happier that this huge event has chosen Central City.
"This will be a multi-state event with hundreds of competitors of all age groups,” said Johnson. “If you or your children have wanted to try Tae Kwon DO, this will be a perfect time to see what goes on during competition. I think Muhlenberg County is growing every day in a positive way, and this tournament will be a big boost to our county, as well as the Central City Convention Center."
Although many who have only been exposed to karate through action movies may think it's all about sparring or fighting, Johnson is quick to point out that the true essence of the sport are "honor, discipline and respect, to be loyal to your God, obedient to your parents, honorable to your friends, never retreat in battle, and always fight sensibly. I have seen students that need focus in life and Tae Kwon DO helps them a lot. I have seen students that are too aggressive and it helps them work off their aggression with a hard workout. Some have had behavior problems and it helps greatly with this as well."
Black Belt testing begins Friday at the convention center at 6:30 PM. Saturday eliminations start at 9:00 AM with several guests and presentations. Finals are at 5. Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children, and those under 5 get in free.
