yonts a 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (6/11/13) – A total of $110,800 for projects and programs in the Pennyrile region was approved by the state legislative Government Contract Review Committee today.

Rep. Brent Yonts, D- Greenville, a current member and former chairman of the committee, said the funding includes $60,000 in coal severance funds for the Hopkins County Fiscal Court to renovate the Rosenwald-Smith Center and $45,000 in coal severance funds awarded to the City of Greenville for downtown renovations.

The Greenville renovations will include erecting a statue of Ephraim McLean Brank on the Veterans Mall, said Yonts. Brank, a Greenville lawyer and surveyor, is known for his heroic acts while serving as a lieutenant in the War of 1812.

“He is noted by historians for his marksmanship skills at the Battle of New Orleans—the final major battle of the war,” said Yonts.

In addition to coal severance funds, a total of $5,818 in federal funds was approved by the committee for summer programming offered through the Kentucky Migrant Education Program at Madisonville Community College.

Yonts praised the committee for passing funding through to local communities.

“Every dollar, every cent of these funds will go toward local and regional improvements, whether they be educational, cultural, or social,” he said. “I am pleased to be able to be a part of bringing these funds home.”
