receive checkMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (7/8/13) – The Muhlenberg County Sheriff’s Office has released information stating that the Sheriff’s Office was awarded a large sum of money due to a recent drug bust.

On July 3rd, The Muhlenberg County Sheriff’s Department received a check for $40, 800.00. The monies were awarded to the department as a result of a drug bust.

KSP Trooper Jon McGehee and Deputy Sheriff (K-9 Handler) Will Ward performed a traffic stop on John D. Reid of Hilltop Lane in Drakesboro earlier this year. Officers found Reid in possession of heroin, prescription pills and marijuana.

Manny, the Sheriff Dept. K-9 Unit, was deployed and was able to locate crystal methamphetamine inside the vehicle. Officers were then able to obtain a search warrant for Reid’s residence where several ounces of crystal methamphetamine were located. The bust was significant because the crystal methamphetamine had a street value that exceeded $20,000. Reid later received a 15 year prison sentence and agreed to pay the Commonwealth $48,000.00 in lieu of personal real estate. The Sheriff’s Department was awarded 85% of the forfeiture.

The monies will provide funding for supplies and equipment commonly used for law enforcement. The same day that the Sheriff’s Office received the check for $40,800, they also received checks for the amounts of $850.00 and $637.50.

The department finds the seizures helpful because it places stress on the dealer and provides needed funding without creating an undue burden on tax payers.
