CASA Program of Hopkins County Receives National Grant

kids-at-playgrdHOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (5/15/14) — The CASA Program of Hopkins County of Madisonville, KY has been awarded a $20,000 Advocacy grant from the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association.

This money will be used to increase the number of children ages 7-17 who are benefitting from CASA volunteer advocacy in Hopkins County.

There are currently 946 CASA and volunteer guardian ad litem offices across the country training and supporting a network of 77,102 volunteers who ensure that children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect receive needed services and a voice in determining their futures.

In 2013, National CASA is awarding a total of $3.65 million in federal grants. Funds are provided by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Department of Justice, as authorized under the Victims of Child Abuse Act of 1990.

“CASA programs continue to face deep budget cuts as a result of the still-struggling economy," says Michael Piraino, CEO of the National CASA Association. “National CASA grants provide strength and stability to our network, ensuring we continue to support the children who need help the most.”

"I appreciate greatly the work and assistance of CASA volunteers and staff. Says, Hon. Susan Wesley McClure, Hopkins Family Court Judge. Many times their input is the most reliable information I receive. CASA provides a voice for children whose futures are determined by the Court, but whose ability to speak out and make known their true situations is limited. The CASA's loyalty is to the child and to the child's best interest."

The CASA Program of Hopkins County was started May 1997. 50-60 children receive CASA advocacy each year, sadly we are only able to serve 20-30% of the children that actually need a CASA volunteer. 718 children were reported as abused or neglected in Hopkins County last year. This grant will allow us to expand our program by adding a part time person that will work to recruit new volunteers to advocate for school aged children.
