Scoping It Out: Walking My First 5K

walking 2OWENSBORO, Ky. (8/12/13)-- Well, I still wouldn’t call myself a runner.

Not yet, anyway.

After much icing, wrapping, medicating, and soul searching, I decided not to run in the Glow in the Park marathon on Saturday. Despite how much I wanted to run, mother’s orders told me not to.

So, when I got to Yellow Creek Park on Saturday night, needless to say I wasn’t in the best mood. I saw all the experienced runners stretching to warm up and slowly migrating to the start line. That should’ve been me, I thought to myself bitterly.

Something changed, though, when I started walking up to start line. I guess somewhere between hearing a pumped-up Black Eyed Peas song and putting on a glow-stick necklace and bracelet set, I realized that it could be fun. There was just something about being in a group of more than a thousand walking and running for a good cause, that made me change my attitude about the whole experience.

As I walked to the back of the line, I noticed just how excited everyone was just to be a part of the night’s festivities. When I heard the gun to release the runners and walkers, I felt just as excited as I would’ve been if I were running. Even though I was walking, I still got to experience the foam pits and being smothered in glow-in-the-dark paint and powder. By the end of the race, I felt accomplished.

New Beginnings, the sponsor of the Glow in the Park Run, was also very pleased with the outcome of the race.

“We were really pleased with the numbers,“ Karla Ward, Director of New Beginnings, said. “Overall for the first one, there weren’t too many glitches.”

Someday, I’ll get my chance to run. Well, in three to four weeks when my ankle heels and I am given the ‘okay’ to start training again, I can start thinking about running again. This was just my first 5k, and there will be hundreds more in my lifetime. I will run the whole length of a 5k to show my stamina, athleticism, and drive, but it may have to be in the distant future. I’ve become okay with that. Someday, I will be able to call myself a runner…just not today.
