monster ohio 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/7/13) - Hundreds of fishermen from all over the U.S. will gather to see if they can catch a 100 pound monster this weekend at English Park.

The Monsters on the Ohio Tournament, in its fourth year in Owensboro, spotlights catfish anglers and gives them a chance to break the Kentucky State Record for Bluecats, 104 pounds caught in the Newburgh Pool. Early pre-fishing projections have put the catfish at 90 to 94 pounds on this part of the Ohio River.

“I think someone will get lucky (this year),” said George Riley, a sponsor with Diamond J Trucking.

The event was founded by Aaron Wheatley, an Owensboro resident, who knew that with the hundreds of million dollars of downtown renovation, fishermen would be looking for a “class act tournament.” The first year of the tournament, 28 boats were registered, and have almost doubled each year after. This year, there are approximately 130 boats hoping to catch a monster.

This event is open to the public; there will be food from local vendors, and give-aways such as a $20,000 boat. It is a family-oriented event with contests for kids and live music. Hosts from well-known fishing television shows like those on the World Fishing Network will also be taping at the tournament.

Wheatley says he has much appreciation for the fishermen and the tournaments winners can expect to receive “big money” and prizes.

“It’s a celebration for the world of cat fishing,” Wheatley said.

Monsters on the Ohio is sponsored by many local businesses such as: Don Moore, American RV, the Owensboro Convention Center, Impact Sports Marketing, and Parks and Recreation.

The event will be held at English Park Oct. 11 and 12 from noon to 6 p.m. For more information, visit: www.monstersontheohio.com or their Facebook page.
