ky trans_300OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/11/13) – During a stop to survey the ongoing construction of a new roundabout that will connect Kentucky Highway 56 with Kentucky Highway 81, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 2 Chief Engineer Kevin McClearn and district spokesperson Keith Todd told SurfKY News the roundabout is expected to open to traffic in one to two weeks.

Though the work won't be completely finished when the roundabout first opens, McLearn said it would be well marked to help people navigate through it as construction wraps up.

"(Drivers should) be prepared for changing conditions, but we're going to make it very evident which way you need to go," McClearn said.

Todd said the roundabout will probably open on a Saturday to give people time to drive it during the weekend rather than on a busy weekday morning when it would be more clogged so that people can test it out "to get used to it."

Todd said the roundabout greatly reduces the number of "conflict" points where vehicles can collide, and noted that the design of the roundabout also reduces the chances of a serious accident. Particularly, he pointed out, the new road design eliminates "T" intersections in favor of continual circular movement.

The total cost for the roundabout was approximately $1.4 million, including a $45,000 change order to make the roundabout more navigable for large farm equipment. KYTC agreed to make the changes after farmers expressed concern about the dimensions of the street and the curb on the curves.

The tentative completion date for the project is Dec. 1.
