Life Science Academy To Host Open House

octcs building 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (2/4/14) – The Life Science Academy of Community Campus will host an open house on Thursday, Feb. 6, in Room 107 of the Advanced Technology Center on the Owensboro Community and Technical College main campus.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a welcome session for new recruits, followed by testimonials shared by current Life Science Academy (LSA) students at 6:30 p.m.

Parents of current and potential students, members of the community and representatives from area businesses are invited to stop by between 6:45 and 8 p.m. to learn more about Community Campus, the Life Science Academy and its benefits for students.

The open house will feature exhibits demonstrating some of the Life Science Academy students’ favorite labs.

These displays offer hands-on experiments for those who wish to participate! Exhibit details are still being finalized but samples include the following:

1. Crime Scene: Explores the crime scene that sets the stage for our freshman course. Guests can look at their own fingerprint and hair samples under a microscope.

2. DNA Extraction: Explains how DNA can be extracted from cells. Guests can extract their own DNA (with a quick and simple method) and keep in a centrifuge tube to take with them.

3. Blood Spatter: Shows how experts can read the details of a crime in blood spatter shape and size. Guests can spatter “blood” and examine the results to see if the drops follow the rules of blood spatter analysis.

4. Chemical Indicators: Shows how various chemical reactions can be used to determine the contents of an unknown solution. Guests can test “stomach contents” to help determine our “victim’s” last meal.

5. The Eye: Explores human vision. Guests may participate in an actual cow eye dissection (if they choose).

6. Optical Illusions: A companion to the eye booth, this booth will display several cool illusions and explain how and why our eye and mind see what they see.

7. Secrets Behind the Brain: Explains how each part of the brain works and explores what we know (and don’t know) about our most mysterious organ!

8. Missing Persons: Goes in-depth into the skeletal system with a look at skeletal remains. Guest can “dig out” bones, learn how to identify each and learn what they can tell us about the skelton’s age and gender.

The evening will also include a student-led social media booth and community project booth; as well as application and assessment booths for recruits and a “Meet the Professors” booth.

A representative from Owensboro Health will also be on hand to provide information about potential careers in the biomedical field.
