Participants to Plunge, Raise Money for Special Olympics

Special olympics_kyOWENSBORO, Ky. (2/6/14) — Consider the recent freezing temperatures.

Most want to remain indoors and attempt to keep warm, while others decide to take on the cold and dive into frigid waters.

Crazy?

Maybe. But plunging into icy conditions is actually for a good cause.

The Special Olympics Kentucky Polar Bear Plunge is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year.

On Saturday, Feb. 8, Owensboro participants will take a dip in the lake at The Hines Center.

The Plunge works like a Walk-a-Thon where participants solicit internal donations, whether online, through a team page, or email blasts.

Last year, the Polar Bear Plunge raised $37,000 to support the efforts of Special Olympics Kentucky athletes.

“(This event) supports our year-round mission to provide services for the athletes,” said Candace Thompson, Special Olympics Senior Special Events Director. “Without events like this we would not be able to support our mission.”

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Feb. 8 at the Hines Center, 1 Wellness Drive.

The Polar Bear Plunge is free and open to the public.
