dcps2 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (2/10/14) – Southern Oaks Elementary School will observe Digital Learning Day on Thursday, Feb. 13, with a variety of special hands-on activities for students scheduled throughout the day.

The school’s Student Technology Leadership students will present a Google Earth “field trip” to kindergarten and first-grade students from 8:40 to 9:10 a.m.

They will then guide second-graders in a coding exercise from CODE.org from 8:40 to 11:20 a.m.

The Alliance for Excellent Education promotes “effective applications of technology in schools.”

“At Southern Oaks, we try to plan technology-based activities that are different from the technology students use on a daily basis,” said Kara Westerfield, who is helping to coordinate the Digital Learning Day at SOES. “While word processing and Internet research still play an important role in school, there are so many more tools available to students, teachers, and families. This Digital Learning Day is especially exciting as students will employ leadership skills they have gained through the Leader in Me Program. Having Student Technology Leadership Program students present new technological tools not only makes it more exciting for fellow students, but also makes technology more friendly for teachers. We want Digital Learning Day to not only be a showcase of new tools, but also to promote lifelong curiosity and subsequent learning through the tools available in the ever-changing and exciting world of technology.”
