OWENSBORO, Ky. (2/27/14) – Approximately 70 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade will participate in a “Pledge of a Good Young Man” ceremony at Meadow Lands Elementary School during a special assembly from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in the MLES gym.
As part of the ceremony, the boys will share goals of the Boys’ Group and highlight the importance of boys becoming good men.
Members will recite the “Pledge of a Good Young Man,” which was developed by members of the Boys’ Group and club sponsor Brad Dedman.
The pledge identifies the traits and characteristics of good men with a goal of reminding boys of choosing the right path in life. The ceremony will also include presentation of bracelets with the words “Be a Man” to represent the boys’ commitment.
Among the items listed in the pledge are promises to follow the rules of society, home and school; be respectful of women, the elderly, the weak, private property and nature; to assist those in need of help; and refrain from bad language, drugs, alcohol, tobacco and fighting.
Other promises in the pledge are:
- “I will do what is right, even if it seems like I am alone in my convictions”
- “I will tell the truth and take responsibility for my mistakes”
- “I will not participate in activities or games that take me off the path to manhood.
The boys will sign the document with the promise “to follow this pledge to the best of my ability."
Brad Dedman, MLES guidance counselor, said the goal of the pledge is to remind the boys that “Just being a certain age doesn’t make you a man. Being a good man requires that you act in a way that earns the title of being a good man. Our country, our communities and our families need good men.”The boys’ parents and families have been invited to attend the pledge signing ceremony. The school is located at 3500 Hayden Road.
