traffic light 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (4/22/14) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is preparing to place a new traffic signal into flashing mode on Kentucky 54/Leitchfield Road at the intersection with Commonwealth Court in Owensboro starting Thursday, April 24.

The new signal along Kentucky 54 at the east edge of Owensboro is being placed in flashing mode Thursday to allow motorists to become familiar with the location before the signal goes into full green-yellow-red operation.  The signal is expected to become fully operational at approximately 10 a.m. Monday, April 28.

This new signal is at Kentucky 54/Leitchfield Road mile point 3.565.

Motorists should take note of the new signal and be prepared for changes in traffic flow it will create in the area.

This traffic signal design is the first of its kind in KYTC District 2. It will have a flashing arrow 3-section signal head above the Kentucky 54 left turn lane.  This is an additional safety feature which allows a traffic signal head to be placed over the center of all Kentucky 54 lanes. There will be no “protected” left turn at this location. However, a flashing yellow arrow above the turn lane will indicate a “permissive” left turn after yielding to oncoming traffic at the intersection. The flashing yellow arrow will become solid yellow before the signal changes to red.

Again, motorists should use appropriate caution due to changes in traffic flow that will be created by this new signal.
