God’s Great Outdoors – Opening Day of Rifle Season

DEER SPORTS 300KENTUCKY (11/7/12) – Hello again folks! I hope you are having a blessed week. It is that time of year again the deer are running everywhere.

This weekend will mark the opening of the 2012 Kentucky rifle season. This year will be my first to miss out on the whole weekend of hunting. I am working the whole weekend but I am gearing up for next weekend’s quota hunt down at West Kentucky Wildlife Management Area (WMA).

This WMA is located west of Paducah and offers a great opportunity to harvest a giant whitetail. I scouted the area two years ago when I was drawn to hunt, but failed to hunt the area because I had already harvested a buck.

I have studied the maps online. The Google topical maps offer an excellent way of scouting prior to entering the property. The deer down there can only be hunted with a shotgun or black powder rifle. I am leaning toward the shotgun slug. The deer must at least have a minimum of a 15-inch spread to be available for harvest. I am going to be very picky. I don't plan shooting anything less than 150 inches.

My son was also drawn and is planning on hunting with me. I am looking forward to spending some quality time with him as well. We will be hunting within 100 yards of the Ohio River. The timbers in those river bottoms are huge.

Everyone be safe this weekend and be sure of your targets.

Until next time God bless and be safe.
