KENTUCKY (12/6/12) - It's the last call for anybody that needs to get out in the Whitetail woods with a so-called firearm this season. December muzzleloader season opens up in Kentucky this Saturday and if you haven't filled your tag up yet, here's your chance to get out in the deer woods. According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, it should be close to the 2nd Rut, as the experts may call it. It is usually harder to take a trophy buck this late in the season due to several issues. All the foliage on most gutters are bare now and it's really hard to hide in a tree stand without being spotted by a sharp-eyed whitetail. Another issue is that a lot of deer have learned that its hunting season now as they have either been bumped, spooked, or heard a lot of gun shots, and deer may be a little more nervous and alert as of now.
I suggest that you get out and do some foot work and locate the freshest sign possible as of tracks, rubs, and even a scrape. Locate a good tree, such as a big cedar, so you may place your tree stand on it and it will give you some good cover for this late season.
As for your "Smoke Pole" get on the range and make a couple of good shots at different yardage distances to make sure that your gun is accurate. Another good tip is to pay special attention to the wind for more than one reason. The deer will wind check a lot more this late season. I prefer to hunt with a cross wind while on stand. If you do get a shot, the smoke will drift away as soon as you pull the trigger.
As always, remember safety comes first and good luck to all that will venture out for that trophy buck or a nice doe for some good meat in the freezer. If you are undecided about your deer meat, a processor can make some awesome buck sticks and summer sausage!
Also there's an excellent opportunity to donate your deer meat to a local organization called "Want not...Waste not." It is operated by Chad Browning of Greenville, KY. His contact number is 1-270-635-0544. I'm sure that a needy family would appreciate the venison.
Until next week, I hope all a great weekend and a successful week while afield "MuzzleLoading" for whitetail. I'll see you on the Water or in the Woods!
