God’s Great Outdoor Adventures – Winter Storms offer Great Time to Predator Hunt

DEER SPORTS 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (12/26/12) – Hello again folks! I hope you are having a blessed week. I would like to take time to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I must apologize for not having a column for the last two weeks. I have been extremely busy shopping, working and visiting my Mother-in-Law in ICU. She is out of the hospital now and doing as good as can be expected for her condition. Please continue to pray for her as she is a very sick lady.

I haven’t had a lot of time to get out in the woods for the past couple of weeks, but I did go rabbit hunting a couple of times and saw several. Now that the weather is changing from 70 degree temperatures to freezing, I am shifting gears.

Western Kentucky is under a winter storm warning for the next couple of days. Anytime the weather drops to freezing temps, the wildlife begin to feed heavily. The predators, such as Coyotes, Foxes and Bobcats also begin to search hard for food.

I decided to go out for a couple of hours on Christmas day and try out my new Predator call. I bought a Johnny Stuart call from Dick’s Sporting Goods. This is usually a $50.00 call, but I only paid $30.00 for it in a last-minute shopping trip. This call has a remote that will reach out to 50 yards from your location. This helps the predator focus on the location of the call, and not that of the hunter.

The first attempt led me to hunting over a pasture field inside a clump of trees. I had the rabbit squeal running for about 15 minutes when I heard two shots from behind me. Apparently I was calling in a Coyote and my neighbor saw it before I did and shot it. He didn’t know that I was calling them in at the time. I am just glad that the Coyote was harvested.

The second setup was inside the timber. It was very thick. I was focusing on calling in a Bobcat. I didn’t have any luck, but I had an awesome time in the field.

I am going to be watching this weather and, Lord willing, I will get back after the predators next weekend.

I just want to remind everyone of the free Youth Deer Hunting weekend coming up this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Make a kids day and spend some time taking them hunting.

Until next week, God bless and be safe!
