LEXINGTON, Ky. (1/21/13) – The University of Kentucky rifle team earned its second victory of the weekend on Sunday, defeating No. 10 Memphis 4,646 – 4,598 in Oxford, Miss.
“I’m very proud of the performance the team gave today,” UK head coach Harry Mullins said. “They focused in on every shot and really maximized their performance today. It was good to see some people step up and meet the challenge.”
Kentucky gained an early 24 point lead in smallbore, shooting a 2300 to open the match. Seniors Heather Greathouse and Stacy Wheatley led the Wildcats in smallbore, with Greathouse shooting a 578 and Wheatley posting a 576. Fellow senior Ed Ryznar stepped up and delivered a 574.
Sophomore Cody Manning and freshman Luke South recorded personal bests in smallbore, each shooting a 575.
The Wildcats added to their lead with a 2346 in air rifle, led by a 590 from Greathouse. The senior posted two 590s in air rifle over the weekend. Ryznar had a solid showing in air rifle with a 588 while junior Aaron Holsopple shot a 585.
Manning shot a 587 in air rifle to bring his aggregate score on the day to 1162, a personal best.
“Overall, I felt like it was a good weekend,” Mullins said. “Some of our shooters felt like they left some points out there but they learned a lot about putting themselves in a position to gain them the next time. Again, I’m very proud of the performance of the team throughout the whole weekend.”
Kentucky was without senior Henri Junghänel, junior Emily Holsopple, sophomore Elijah Ellis and freshman Connor Davis as they are traveling abroad to compete in the Bavarian Air Gun Championships in Munich, Germany.
