Outdoors with Big Country – Summertime Bassin’

fish water2

KENTUCKY (7/4/13) – This time of year, July, is usually hot and water temps are into the 80’s. It seems that it’s hard to fish in the heat of the day. During the summer season, the best bites are very early or right at dusk in low light conditions.

In small ponds and lakes, it’s a challenge to sometimes fish for quality catches from the banks. I suggest that local anglers take this opportunity to make a trip to the big lakes, Barkley and Kentucky.

To avoid the crowds of the holidays on the lakes, I strongly suggest that you try fishing from sidewalks and rock piers near the marinas on the lakes. My favorite hot spot is out in front of Kentucky Dam Village Marina on the sidewalks. You can cast a crank bait at these locations for largemouth or smallmouth bass.

One good tip is to abide by their regulations, as some areas are restricted from fishing off the docks and boat ramps. Go where it is legal and the fishing is usually good. I’ve caught several good bass from the aforementioned areas.

Another good concept is to cast a crank bait or throw a six inch worm on a Texas rig, working it slowly around the rocky points.

I’ve also caught some very nice stringers of fish below the tailgaters, a location where there is always a good chance of you hooking into a whopper. I’ve caught several stripers near 20 pounds from there. It’s a great fight with a seven foot bait cast rod, equipped with an Abu Garcia reel, strung with 17 pound test line.

There is also a chance that the catfish are biting this time of year below both of the dams. Blues are a frequent catch below on rod and reel below the Kentucky Dam tail waters.

Keep in mind that safety is always the most important factor while fishing below any dams. Don’t get yourself in a situation that might endanger you, such as not being able to see at night while fishing from the banks. Pay close attention to the alarms and horns of the locks. While catching a good-sized fish is fun, it’s not worth risking your life. Stay alert while fishing near these areas and good luck, as always. There’s a lot of fish still to be caught in this hot season.

Good fishing and good luck!

Until next week, see you on the water or in the woods!

FISH OF THE WEEK
fish week 300

This week we are featuring Scott Graham with the Fish of the Week. Scott caught this stringer of big Bowfins in a small pond area that sets just off a tributary of the Green River in Muhlenberg County, Ky. Scott’s bait of choice for these big boys was a mix of shrimp and chicken liver.

Great catch Scott!

Big Country is currently featuring local anglers throughout the region in his Fish of the Week section.
