Outdoors with Big Country – Deer Season is Open!

outdoors big country1 300KENTUCKY (9/6/13) – On Saturday morning, at daybreak, throughout the state of Kentucky there will be several thousand avid bow hunters climbing up trees into their stands. With high hopes and careful planning, they may just get an opportunity at the buck of a lifetime.

Saturday marks Kentucky’s opening day of Archery Season throughout the state. With the mild weather that we have experienced lately, it may just be a good weekend opener.

Depending upon your hunting area, most of the time the early season afternoon hunts are most productive. Set up your stand near deer trails that lead to a watering hole or a green field where the deer are feeding.

As always, keep in mind that safety is important and should not be overlooked. Wear the appropriate clothing, use tick repellent and always wear your safety harness in your deer tree stand. I cannot stress enough the importance of tree stand safety, as this is the number one cause of injury to bow hunters. Most accidents happen when you transfer your weight from the tree climbing over into your stand and your strap or chain breaks. The fall can be tragic. Double check your tree stands, always.

Use two ratchet straps and a chain if possible and make sure it’s secure to the tree. Always wear your safety harness at all times, even while climbing.

Your trip to the deer woods should be a good experience and not a trip to the Emergency Room, or even worse!

Also, make a checklist before your hunt and take a backpack of necessary items with you. Take an extra shirt, a knife, flashlight, scent control cover lures, rope or string, handkerchief, hand wipes, bottled water, snack bars, etc. Also, ThermaCell Mosquito Repellant is a must for this early season.

A good idea is also to check all your equipment, such as your bow, sights, strings, cables, arrows, broad heads, and even your ATV.

Preparation and scouting will get you a filled deer tag and success.

I would like to wish everyone the best of luck. Hopefully your arrows will fly straight! May your tracking task be a short trail, and remember to tag before you drag! Get your deer tag on and the dates punched in your tag before moving the deer anywhere!

Good luck to all, and I wish you the shot of a lifetime!
