uk tennis women1 300LEXINGTON, Ky (10/28/13) - The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team finished the final day of a three-day tournament Sunday afternoon at the Tennessee Fall Invite, taking home two wins against North Carolina State University in doubles and a win against host Tennessee in singles.

“This weekend was very challenging for the team because we were missing players and also dealing with some health issues, but I am proud of the way my team handled it and competed with so much pride,” junior Edmée Morin-Kougoucheff said.

The Wildcats began the day winning two of their three matches against North Carolina State University in the doubles competition. Aldila Sutjiadi and CeCe Witten defeated Joelle Kissell and Rachael James-Baker, 8-5. Morin-Kougoucheff paired with Kelsey Dieters routed the Volunteers, 8-5. Morin-Kougoucheff and Dieters finished the tournament, 2-1. Elisha Hande and Natalia Janowicz topped Stephanie Fox and Kirsten Lewis, 8-4.

In singles action, Kentucky fell to Southeastern Conference opponent Tennessee, 1-5. In the tournament championship, Sutjiadi fell to Joanna Henderson in a close three-set match, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4. Witten, Fox, Dieters, and Lewis all suffered losses in singles action against Tennessee.

In addition to her doubles win, Morin-Kougoucheff was the only Wildcat to also bring home a win against the Volunteers. Morin-Kougoucheff beat Tiffany Tavares in two sets, 6-1, 6-4.

“We know what we need to work on until January. I can’t wait until our first dual match.”

The Wildcats will begin their regular season against the University of Cincinnati and Ball State University on Jan. 18, 2014 in Lexington, Ky.
