OWENSBORO, Ky., (11/25/13) – Last Friday, the Owensboro Red Devils were able to hold off Franklin-Simpson on the goal line with under a minute left in the game. The Devils defeated Franklin-Simpson 21-13 and were crowned the Regional Champions.
Owensboro jumped out with the lead early when junior running back Michael Johnson ran for a 25 yard touchdown. Owensboro’s defense seemed to have control of the Wildcats until the middle of the fourth quarter when Franklin-Simpson scored with nine minutes remaining which made the score 21-13.
The Red Devils ran the ball with the intent to drain the clock but had to punt to ball back to the Wildcats with 3:30 left in the game. The Wildcats took the ball all the way to two yard line and had a chance to score at the end of the game.
The game ended when Owensboro’s defense stopped Franklin-Simpson from the two yard line on fourth down as time expired.
After the game, the Red Devil’s Head Football Coach Joe Prince said, “Our kids played hard and found a way to win. The difference was our players did not quit.”
Owensboro will advance to Semi-State to take on 11 – 2 Collins High School, the game will be played in Owensboro.
