Western Kentucky Endures Day of Twisters

tornado 300WESTERN KENTUCKY (11/18/13) — Several communities in western Kentucky suffered from damages to structures from tornadoes spawned by a massive cold front that shifted into 75-degree weather in the area mid afternoon Sunday, Nov. 17.

Several communities in Southwestern Indiana also took damage while there were five deaths from storms in central and southern Illinois.

Cheryl and Barrett Brewer of Nortonville were at their home when warnings alerted them to a tornado bearing down on them about 3:30 p.m. on their Red Hill Road home.

“The sun was shining just a few minutes before it hit,” said Cheryl. “We went to the storm shelter, and it hit.”

Cheyrl said their home is without electricity because a fallen tree yanked the meter box out of the side of their house. Several windows and the roof were also damaged.

While the house looked intact for the most part, the yard was a twisted mass of tree limbs and debris. The Brewers' horse trailer had been lifted up from their back yard and deposited across the road in a field.

The Brewers lost their 7-year-old horse, Roscoe, that had to be put down due to his injuries.

The couple sat on top of their vehicle in the driveway Monday as American Red Cross worker Gibert Abney assessed their needs to make his report.

“The Red Cross was really good to us last year when our house burned in Mortons Gap,” said Cheryl. “We really appreciated that.”

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a tornado was confirmed in Brookport, Ill., at 2:20 p.m.; another was reported east of Old Shawneetown, north of Morganfield, Ky., at 2:45 p.m.; and, a tornado at Nortonville, Ky., at 3:40 p.m. There were multiple other reports of funnel clouds and a tornado on Bancroft Road in Greenville about 3:52 p.m.

The steple on Mt. Carmel Church on Bob Bruce Road was snapped in two and the building also suffered other structural damages from Sunday's storm.

Kim Howard snapped a photo of the rain-wrapped tornado on the ground near Crofton, and shared that with SurfKY News in the slideshow below.
