KYDOT Take Stock of Salt

kydot saltWESTERN KENTUCKY (12/15/13) — Kentucky Transportation Cabinet personnel have been busy calculating the quantity of salt and other ice-fighting materials that were used during last week's early-season snow and ice event.

KYTC spokesman Keith Todd provided assurance highway crews across Western Kentucky still have plenty of salt and other ice-fighting materials in stock. However, crews have already started restocking to be prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws their way during the remaining winter months.

While it will take a few more days for paperwork to be processed to allow a full accounting of the storm response effort, some early numbers are shaping up.

KYTC District 1 crews reported using 7,750 tons of salt and about 16,000 gallons of calcium chloride to treat 2,800 miles of highway in the 12-county region.

KYTC District 2 crews used 7,970 tons of salt and about 35,920 gallons of calcium chloride to treat highways in the 11-county region. Todd noted that with 3,300 miles of highway, District 2 has more lane miles that any other district in the state.

As of this morning, preliminary numbers indicated crews statewide had used about 73,475 tons of salt and about 200,000 gallons of calcium chloride.

Todd noted it will likely take a few days for paperwork detailing employee overtime, equipment, and fuel costs to be entered and computed.

The Cabinet has budgeted $27.5 million for snow and ice response this winter. Todd said any funds left over after the winter response effort can be used for maintenance projects next summer. KYTC snow and ice season runs from Nov. 1 to April 1.
