MADISONVILLE, Ky. (3/31/13) – The Hopkins Co. Relay for Life organization works diligently in the Madisonville community all year round to promote healing to the ill and honor to the lost. There are over 40 teams in the Hopkins County group alone. Among their many accomplishments, they raise a significant amount of money annually to donate to the American Cancer Society.
This morning the teams hosted a pancake breakfast at the West Kentucky Consistory located at 668 Park Avenue next to the National Guard Armory. The pancake breakfast is part of their annual fundraising activity schedule. It began at 8 a.m. this morning, and the last of the diners were finishing up their breakfast around 10 a.m. when the breakfast was scheduled to conclude. The teams have been selling tickets for the breakfast prior to today, however many visitors purchased their “All you can eat” breakfast at the door for $5.00. One ticket provided a plate of pancakes, bacon or sausage, and your choice of orange juice, milk, or coffee. The team members walked around to each table graciously serving each visitor their breakfast. The First Methodist Church team was set up selling crafts, bracelets, scarves, and uniquely custom designed flip flops, along with the Luminaria bag and candle forms.
Fundraising Coordinator Jeremy Smith noted the group’s appreciation for all the businesses who donated the products for the breakfast from the pancake mix down to the cream and sugar. He gave special recognition to The Country Cupboard, Wendy’s, Goldenrod Dairy, Dixie Pan, and Bestway in Nortonville.
All of the teams are currently selling the Luminaria bags and candles for this year’s Relay and Auction which will be held at Hopkins Co. Central High School on May 31 from 7 a.m.-7p.m. The deadline to order a bag and candle is April 15, 2013. You may contact any community Relay team member for purchasing information. The bag with a candle alone is $7.00. A lantern with candle and shepherd’s hook is $30 each or you may purchase two at once for a total of $40.
Smith informed of the next fundraising event, a dodge ball tournament being held April 20 at West Broadway Elementary School and encouraged the community to get signed up. The deadline for registration on the event will also be Apr. 15. You must be at least 15 years of age to enter. For registration for the Dodge ball Tournament, contact Jeremy Smith at (270) 635-5233.
