george jones 300KENTUCKY (4/27/13) – For decades there has been one Country Music singer that has been a favorite throughout the state of Kentucky. Today, SurfKY News is saddened to announce that George Jones, The Possum, has passed away at 81 years old.
 
Jones was born on September 12, 1931, in Saratoga Texas. He was raised with six brothers and sisters in Texas. Jones passion for country music began at 9-years-old when he was given his first guitar. One little known fact about Jones was that he served in the military, a soldier for the Marines.
 
George was well known for numerous songs that hit the number one charts in country music over the years. Some of the more famed songs he performed were He Stopped Loving Her Today, White Lightning, She Thinks I Still Care, I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool, and many more.
 
George Jones performed with such music legends as Barbara Mandrell, Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, and several others. Concerts were held with George throughout the state during his career.
 
George passed away today, on April 26, 2013, after being admitted to Vanderbilt Med Center in Nashville for blood pressure issues.
