•1861 - The first US transcontinental telegram is sent (from San Francisco to Washington, D.C.)

•1901 - Anna Taylor becomes the first woman to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel

•1903 - Birthday - Melvin Purvis, American FBI agent (d. 1960) noted for leading the manhunts that tracked such outlaws as Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and John Dillinger.

•1929 - "Black Thursday," start of the stock market crash, Dow Jones down 12.8%

•1931 - Gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years for tax evasion

•1940 - 40 hour work week goes into effect (Fair Labor Standards of 1938)

•1947 - Birthday - Kevin Kline, St. Louis, actor (Sophie's Choice, Big Chill, Wild Wild West)

•1968 - Mick Jagger & Marianne Faithful busted for pot, released on £50 bail

•1969 - "Love Story" actress Ali MacGraw (30) weds film producer Robert Evans (39)

•1991 - Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek series, dies of cardiac arrest at age 70

•1994 - Raul Julia, actor (Addams Family), dies of stroke at 54

•1995 - A total solar eclipse occurs in Southwest Asia (2 minutes and 9 seconds)

•2002 - Police arrest spree killers John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, ending the Beltway sniper attacks in the area around Washington, DC

•2005 - Rosa Parks, "the first lady of civil rights" (b. 1913) died of natural causes at the age of 92
