flag half mastFRANKFORT, Ky. (5/15/14) — Governor Steve Beshear has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset Thursday, May 15, 2014, in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

In accordance with a Presidential proclamation, Peace Officers Memorial Day is observed in conjunction with Police Week, May 11-17, and is held in honor of all federal, state and local law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

“Peace Officers Memorial Day allows us to reflect on the sacrifices law enforcement officers take on every day in order to serve and protect our quality of life,” said Gov. Beshear. “Their dedication to service and commitment to public safety is admirable, and I thank them greatly for their service.”

Gov. Beshear encourages individuals, businesses, organizations and government agencies to join in the flag-lowering tribute.

Next week, Gov. Beshear will deliver the keynote address at the Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony on Wednesday, May 21. The event will honor Kentucky officers killed in the line of duty.
