Vehicle Struck by Lightning while Traveling through Kentucky

accident injuries amb 300McCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (8/5/12) – At around 4:32 today, Sunday, August 5, 2012, McCracken County Kentucky Sheriff’s Department officials received a report of a vehicle struck by lightning while traveling down I24, near Paducah.

Once on the scene, Sheriff’s Deputies found that 38-year-old Brian McDowell of Illinois was operating a 2005 Ford Freestyle, traveling westbound on the I24 exit to US68. At that time, a random bolt of lightning struck the vehicle. The massive surge of electricity disabled the vehicles electrical system, causing the vehicle to become inoperable.

After coming to a stop, McDowell and his passengers, 38-year-old Jade McDowell, 11-year-old Grace McDowell, and 17-year-old Paige Krutsinger were treated on the scene and then transferred to Lourdes Hospital.

Sheriff’s Office officials informed SurfKY New reporters that none of the occupants’ injuries were life-threatening.

McCracken County Sheriff’s Department officials were assisted by Mercy Regional EMS and the Reidland Fire Department.
