LEXINGTON, Ky. (7/3/13)—Senator Mitch McConnell’s campaign announced Wednesday that they were releasing a campaign video on behalf of Democratic opponent Alison Lundergan Grimes that reflects what the McConnell’s camp calls “Maybe the worst campaign rollout in Kentucky history.”
The video, titled “What Rhymes with Alison Lundergan Grimes?” features an auto-tuned ditty that highlights Grimes’ allegiance with the Democratic Party and her inexperience. “Sticks to Party Line,” “Left Wing Mime,” and “Not ready for Prime Time” flashes across the screen against footage of Grimes speaking at public events. It also shows footage of President Obama dancing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, with Grimes’ head pasted onto DeGeneres’ body.
The video quickly went viral and got national media attention after it was posted on Tuesday.
“We, at Team Mitch, are nothing if not magnanimous, so we decided to welcome her to the race with what we imagine her campaign theme song might be,” said McConnell’s campaign manager Jesse Benton in a prepared statement.
Grimes’ camp released a statement in response to the video on Wednesday.
"Senator McConnell and his Washington friends' childish campaign video demonstrates how out of touch McConnell is with Kentucky families. Instead of talking about issues, he chooses to resort to silly and careless tactics and cannot even be bothered to spell his name correctly."
Grimes’ statement refers to the fact the McConnell’s name is misspelled at the announcement at the end of the video stating the senator approved the message.
