PADUCAH, KY (8/7/12) – On July 27, 2012 the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department was conducting an unrelated investigation in the area of McNeil-Alsip Road. During this investigation detectives discovered that electricity was being stolen by 6920 McNeil Alsip Road, the Thomas L. Harding residence.
Someone had placed pieces of copper pipe into the meter base and was obtaining electrical service via this means, absent the meter. Jackson Purchase Energy was notified of the discovery and subsequently sent one of their trained representatives to remove the copper pipes and terminate the power to the residence. A further investigation revealed that an unknown individual contacted Jackson Purchase approximately three months ago and inquired about having the power turned on, but never provided them with the necessary payment to reinstate the power.
Detectives located and interviewed Harding on July 31, 2012. Harding admitted to Detectives that he was the one that had fabricated the pieces to steal the power adding he committed the theft around the end of May, 2012. The investigation ensued over the next several days as detectives worked with representatives of Jackson Purchase Energy in efforts of estimating the amount of electricity Harding took unlawfully during the time frame in question. Those efforts lead detective to believe that up to approximately $800.00 may have been stolen by Harding.
On August 7, 2012 Harding was arrested and lodged in the McCracken County Regional Jail for Theft of Services Under $500.00. The decision to charge Harding with Theft Under $500.00 was made after consultation with the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and Jackson Purchase Energy
