Walmart Confirms Plans to Relocate Madisonville Store

walmart-store-front 300x300This morning, Walmart officials confirmed with SurfKY News that the Madisonville Walmart location at 1756 East Center Street will be shutting down.

Daniel Morales with Walmart Media Relations said that the store will be shuttered and a new one built just a mile-and-a-half north at the site of the former York manufacturing facility.

“We always try to provide our customers with everyday low prices, and part of that promise is a pleasant and convenient in-store shopping experience,” said Morales. “We always try to do our best to keep our stores maintained and up to date through periodic remodels. And we’ve been doing this all over the country.”

Morales said that the Madisonville Wal-Mart Super Center has suffered from mine subsidence, and they have worked with an engineering firm to monitor the safety of the structure. He said that at no time has the building been unsafe for occupancy.

The decision has been made, however, to construct a new, cost effective, energy efficient structure at the site of the old York plant located at 1000 Island Ford Road, which was built in 1974. The 345,000 square-foot manufacturing facility is slated for demolition, and the new Walmart store is to be built atop its footprint.

According to Morales, all employees will be transferred to the new site, which Walmart officials expect to be open for business by 2015. City Engineer Bill Jackson said that his office has not yet been contacted by Walmart officials concerning logistics and infrastructure for accessing the new site.

Gerald Cook, President of the Madisonville-Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation (EDC), said that it is the EDC’s policy to not comment on a project that is in-process.

SurfKY News will update the story as more details emerge.
