Hopkins County Central National Honor Society Inducts 20 New Members

HOPKINS COUNTY, KY (11/28/12) — Last Tuesday, November 20th, Hopkins County Central High School caught 20 qualifying students by surprise, as was intended, with an honorary induction into the school’s National Honor Society (NHS) chapter. SurfKY News was invited by school administrators to attend the formal ceremony.

Central Biology teacher, Vicky Fox, explained that there are guidelines and credentials the students must meet in order to be selected as a member. The NHS recognizes outstanding high school and middle school students who demonstrate excellence in areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and overall character.

According to the official web site for the National Honor Society and National Junior Honor Society, there are over one million students participating in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, many US Territories, and Canada.

“Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service,” reads the site.

The NHS was officially established in 1921 in Pennsylvania and was the first National educational organization of its kind. The organization quickly grew into one of the country’s leading educational groups.

The original purposes of the NHS are still in practice today in determining who meets the criteria to become a member: "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools."

Fox gave SurfKY News the prerequisites for a student to apply and be selected into NHS, including a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. They must also be at the junior or senior grade level. There are other things considered in the final selection process such as community involvement and extracurricular activities.

Fox highlighted some of the details of Tuesday’s induction, explaining that only the selected students’ parents were made aware of the names of the chosen inductees. She called the parents days prior to the ceremony to give them notice to attend. The students who had applied were aware that the induction ceremony was being held; however, they did not know specifically whose names would be selected to join until the actual ceremony took place.

National Honor_Society_2012_1SurfKY News had the chance to speak with a couple of senior members of the NHS who were responsible for hosting the induction ceremony for the new members. Jessica Chance and Regina Adams, both seniors at Central, were dressed-up and mission-oriented, going from room to room on Tuesday trying to collect the things they needed to host a memorable ceremony. The current NHS members and the parents of the inductees were instructed to bring in food donations as part of the NHS community service program. Chance and Adams stopped to speak with SurfKY News just long enough to recall their own induction ceremony the previous year, and both recounted how nervous they were in anticipation as to whether or not they were going to be selected. Chance stated that her membership in the NHS has been more than beneficial to her academically and said she may be receiving a scholarship for college through the Society.

Any junior applicant who applies for membership but is declined due to an insufficient GPA is eligible to reapply the following year when they become a senior.

Some of the other areas considered when selecting members are club affiliations; employment status; leadership positions; or extracurricular activities such as sports, ROTC, drama, or band. It is important for prospective NHS members to have significant involvement in the school and community. Membership status is recognized on both state and national levels when applying for scholarships in or out of the state in which one attended high school and became a member.

This year’s inductees were: Lexie Murphy, Kaleb Wade, Darien Harris, Claire Harralson, Audrey Brown, Christian Barnes, Katie Clark, Brett Eakins, Lacey Powell, Lillie Brooks, Hannah Earl, Louise Nicanor, Briana Barnett, Javin Purdy, Hannah Tow, Tiffany Nickelson, Lindsey Chavis, Morgan McCaw, Brooklyn Smith, and Roxanne Coburn. There were already approximately 25 NHS members in Central’s chapter, and they welcome the 20 new additions.

Central NHS members will be attending the Presidential Inauguration as well as an inaugural ball in Washington DC in January, 2013. That’s the first thing on the 2013 agenda for NHS. SurfKY News will keep the community informed on further involvement of the student members.

If you are a student interested in applying for membership to the National Honor Society chapter at your school, or if you are a parent whose child is interested, contact the school’s Community Liaison for details and requirements.
