MUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY (10/1/12) – On September 29, 2012 the Friends of Lake Malone State Park were joined by community volunteers to participate in the 19th Annual National Public Lands Day, Helping Hands for America's Lands.
NPLD is sponsored by Toyota, with contributing sponsor Northrop Grumman in support of let's move outside and The America's Great Outdoors Initiative.
Eighteen people came out to improve Lake Malone State Park. Fifteen dead trees were felled around the park, eight bags of trash were collected from the marina roadway and the beach shoreline, shrubbery was cut back on the trails, and weeds were pulled from the children's playground during the three hours that were committed for this event.
The volunteers extend their appreciation to Lovell's Orchard who donated fried apple pies and a large bag of golden delicious apples for nourishment. Community volunteer Peg Downey kindly provided donuts and also donated a large box of trash bags to FOLMSP. Friends' group members, Cheri Rettig, Barbara Kozik, and Martha Hargrove also provided baked items and various beverages for the morning kick off.
This was the first time that Lake Malone State Park was recognized on National Public Lands Day.
