HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (8/17/13) – This past Saturday, August 10th, people from around the region joined together at the Ballard Convention Center to watch the 3rd annual Strongman competition.Promoter Derek Stone started competing in 2007 after several competitions.
“I just really wanted to give back to the sport,” said Stone. “In 2011, I decided to host the Refuge Barbell Strongman Classic.”
Steadily growing each year, Stone has every intention to keep it growing into the future. Unfortunately promoters can’t compete in their own competitions, which is a NAS regulation.
“I have however, competed in 25 sanctioned competitions,” said Stone. “Last of which was in Shreveport, LA where I won my lightweight pro card.”
Training for a Strongman competition is like training for anything else.
“The only difference is the events change from competition to competition. So you have to be all around strong and ready for anything,” said Stone.
Recently Stone has written a book called “The Refuge Method.” This book is basically a training manual for those who are getting started with a solid training for a Strongman Competition.
“When I first started there wasn’t a lot of information out there about strongman training… I had to learn the hard way,” said Stone. “I wrote this book as a way to give back a little bit and hopefully help with the next generation of strongmen.”
This year’s events included; Log Pass, Farmers/Keg Medley, Progressive Dead Lift, Husafell Stone Carry and Atlas Stones.
Winners of the competition were; in the Novice Women: Whitney Boyd Open Women: Jessica Rush LW and in the Novice Men: Caleb Norton Teen: Josh Gregory Masters: Lee Woody Hw Novice: Corey Downing Lw Open 200: Jon Alderson LW Open 231: Russell Mueller Hw Open: Davey McCann.
