Mayor Jackson Proclaims Jan. 7 as Daughters of the Nile Day

david jackson 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (1/7/14) — During the Madisonville City Council meeting Monday, Jan. 6, Mayor David Jackson proclaimed Jan. 7 as Daughters of the Nile Day.

Daughters of the Nile is an international fraternal organization that consists of 28,000 members in 143 cities throughout the United States and Canada that has thrived since 1913 as a social and charitable organization.

Daughters of the Nile is known to sew both clothing and quilts, and provide books, toys, games and other recreational and educational items that values over $900,000 annually. In 2013, the Daughters of the Nile celebrated their 100th anniversary of services to our communities and children and the City of Madisonville joins in welcoming Supreme Queen Margaret Ann Risk to our community in celebration of their anniversary.

“In the City of Madisonville, we urge all citizens to follow the noble example of service to society set by Daughters of the Nile through their compassion, community service and volunteerism,” said Jackson.

In other news, a review and authorized request was approved by the council for the Madisonville Fire Department to declare its 1987 Pierce Arrow Fire Engine as surplus and to be able to accept sealed bids from Hopkins County Fire Departments for the fire engine with a minimum bid of $7,500. Funds that the fire department receives from the sale of the apparatus will be used to purchase firefighter equipment for the replacement fire engine.

Also, a review and authorized request was approved by the council for the Parks Department to advertise for bids mowing for Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens and Dr. Festus Claybon Memorial Park.

“We would like to go out to bid on a two year contract for the mowing for Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens and Dr. Festus Claybon Memorial Park,” said Chris Taylor, city parks superintendent. “We have been doing this for the last two years and seems to be doing great. This has also taken a huge load off my guys who use to have to mow those parks. This is also a budgeted item.”
