Wildcat’s Davis Adds to List of Honors, A First in UK History

Davis 5LEXINGTON, KY (3/20/12)– The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) has selected Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis as the men’s National Player of the Year in conjunction with the 2012 Oscar Robertson Trophy.

The Chicago, Ill., native was selected as the Freshman of the Year by the USBWA last week. He is averaging 14.3 points and 10.1 rebounds per game en route to leading the Wildcats to a third-straight Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament and a perfect 16-0 record in Southeastern Conference regular season action.

Davis is the first Kentucky player to ever win the award.

"It means a lot to me to win this award,” Davis said. “To win the award is very touching and a big accomplishment, but all the thanks goes to my team, because without them I wouldn't have received these awards.

“The recognition is nice, but I want to win the biggest award of them all and that's the national championship. I have to stay humble and keep working.”

He has started all 36 games this season while shooting 63.6 percent from the field, which ranks as the third best in the nation. Davis also leads the nation in blocks (166). In 30 of the Wildcats' 36 games, he has scored in double figures while recording 18 double-doubles. The 18 double-double efforts rank as the second-highest total in a single season by a UK freshman.

Davis will be presented with the Oscar Robertson Trophy by its namesake, the legendary Oscar Robertson, at the USBWA's annual College Basketball Awards Breakfast on Friday, March 30 at 8 a.m. at the New Orleans Marriott in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Final Four. For tickets to the awards breakfast, visit the USBWA website, usbwa.com.

The Oscar Robertson Trophy is voted on by the entire membership of the association, which consists of more than 900 journalists. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player. The legendary Oscar Robertson was the USBWA's first player of the year in 1959. The USBWA renamed its player of the year award the Oscar Robertson Trophy in 1998.
