Outdoors with Big Country – Holiday Weekend Outdoors

fish sunset1KENTUCKY (5/23/13) – It’s the first big holiday weekend of the season. Whether you choose to go to the lake, camping, fishing, boating, or cooking and grilling outdoors, it’s all in order for relaxing and enjoying the great outdoors.

The weather forecast is looking great for the weekend. Conditions are perfect for having a good time outdoors. If you’re out fishing, the Crappie are still biting, but seem to be on the downside of the spawn. They are still being caught near brush or drop-offs in water from six to 12 feet deep. We have caught several this week and most have been male crappie that were caught using a 10 foot B&M Crappie pole, flipping a 1/16th ounce pearl white color jig, or any jig that resembles a shiner minnow.

Bluegill are starting to bite well also. Try using a cricket or an artificial type cricket. Personally, I recommend a Shelton’s jig that looks like a cricket. They have them in several different colors, such as black or brown, and they work excellent on bluegill.

Bass are still biting great too. We caught several this week using a crank bait or a Fluke style bait.

If you are going out camping this weekend, it should be great with perfect weather conditions.

When it comes to cooking out, remember the safety rules. Contain your campfire safely. Those steaks, burgers and hot dogs will be enjoyed by many.

If you’re on the water, boating, remember to be safe and watch out for other boaters and fishermen. Be a safe boater and be courteous to other boaters.

On the legal end of things, keep in mind that this weekend is Click it or Ticket weekend. Wear your seatbelts! It’s the law and it saves lives. Drive safely.

I wish everyone a great Memorial Day weekend, and ask that you remember the ones that have and do serve our country in uniform.

On a side note, if you aren’t the camping or fishing type of person and are looking for something to do this weekend, don’t’ forget that Luke’s Town and Country Flea Market in Greenville, Ky. Usually has a three day event starting on Sunday and going through until Tuesday.

Until next time, I’ll see you on the water or in the woods!
