OWENSBORO, KY - John A. Strobel, Sr., 86, of Thruston, Kentucky passed away at his home Sunday, September 9, 2012.
He was born July 28, 1926 in Stanley, Kentucky to the late Charles and Annie Strobel. John was a gunner's first mate in the Navy during World War II, serving from 1945-46 on the USS Rankin. He helped establish Millwright Local 1080 in 1962 and served as president for 15 years. He was a member of the brotherhood for 62 years, until his death. After his retirement he enjoyed collecting and restoring antique tractors with his sons.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Rose Strobel in 1996 and by a daughter, Brenda Strobel in 1967.
Survivors include four sons, John Strobel, Jr. (Onda) of Philpot, KY, Bill Strobel (Vickie) of Lewisport, KY, and Jerry Wayne Strobel and Joey Strobel (Candy) both of Owensboro; eight grandchildren and their spouses and seven great grandchildren.
Services are 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at the Chapel of James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and after 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
